Cosy Yet Luxurious Beloved Family Home

Cosy Yet Luxurious Beloved Family Home
Notting Hill, London
A Beloved Family Home

We undertook a full home renovation for this prime property in West London’s Notting Hill. Our clients were an American couple residing in London with their three-year-old twin boys. With their hectic but home-oriented lifestyles, they wanted the interiors to feel like an inner-city sanctuary that was as luxurious as it was comforting while providing the perfect environment to create beautiful memories as a family and when entertaining guests. The chic white drawing room displayed a rich mixture of organic textures and materials and provided a calming inner-city oasis with plenty of living botanicals.

Boutique Hotel-Inspired Interiors With Home Comforts

As avid travellers, our clients were keen to replicate the design and feel of a boutique hotel in their home through the interior design scheme. While this meant having a refined and luxurious approach to our design choices, we also wanted to maintain a level of familiarity and real home comfort. The final outcome was a beautiful combination of high-quality, elegant interiors with a depth of rich textures to bring about a sense of approachability, tactility and comfort. The green fireplace made from Cipollino Verde marble with picture frame detailing made a real statement while providing function and a warming comfort.

A Playful Contrast Of Natural Materials

For a simple but impactful way to bring nature into the home and provide a calming effect, the soft furnishings we selected were made from natural textiles such as wool, silk, cotton and linen. Armchairs in bubbled boucle fabric with soft throws draped over the top gave a cosy, comforting feel. A shaggy sheepskin wool rug was templated to fit the living space and incorporate the curves of the custom made sofa. Cushions in a textured weave with a square pattern from Tibor add a sense of playfulness.

A Well-Stocked Bar For Easy Entertaining

A luxurious bar was placed in between the media and drawing rooms. The Belvedere Granite leathered finish marble bar has ample storage meaning the clients can easily serve guests a refreshment and entertain without having to head to the kitchen. Everything from a sink, tap, wine fridge, fridge with ice compartment and serving apparatus were seamlessly incorporated while remaining cleverly hidden out of sight. We used plenty of marble throughout the home, taking a trip to a stone yard to select specific slabs. As it’s such a versatile stone, you can see it repeated throughout the interior design scheme in various ways.

A Nod To Biophilic Design

Botanicals were very important to our client, so we wanted to communicate a connection with the natural world by bringing the outdoors in. An early morning trip to New Covent Garden Flower Market to select trees provided an immersive experience for the client and an opportunity for insight into caring for the living plants and trees we selected. The family media room displayed a selection of the trees and plants chosen. We incorporated custom joinery for plenty of storage, housing blankets, throws and toys so that the essentials were at arm’s length but not on display.

A Chic Yet Cosy Media Room For Family Relaxation

Family time is precious to these clients, and they wanted to have a defined space that could happily and easily house their children and friends while the adults could be nearby in the drawing-room. Elegant wool material from the Mark Alexander range was used to make the bespoke curtains and was combined with a deep, oversized sofa perfect for sinking into. To reduce sharp edges and keep the interior design child-friendly we opted for custom-made ottomans with upholstered edges. Playful ceramic art from a Korean artist and fun ceramic wall lights add texture and a 3-dimensional feel to the space.

A Multi-Layered Floating Headboard

We really wanted to give off the boutique luxury hotel feel for the principal bedroom, so a standout feature for this room was the triple-layered headboard. A sumptuous panelled headboard including textured linen fabric and leather trims accented by blue scatter cushions by Raf Simons for Kvadrat completed the look. Custom bedside tables in the same wood stain and leather inlays were placed on either side and metallic and glass pendant lighting from J Adams and Co’s Flume range combined with mounted adjustable reading lights made the most of the limited space here. A dramatic wardrobe was placed just behind the headboard with deep metallic finishes on the doors and full-length smoked mirrors.

A Jewel-Toned Principal Bedroom

The leading colour in the principal bedroom was blue, so we continued this into the bathroom and combined it with metallic tones through luxury brushed brass fixtures for added drama. The tiles used here were glazed ceramic subway tiles for a real hotel and spa-like experience. Plenty of storage was incorporated to keep the space uncluttered but functional. Home automation throughout for audio, lighting and heating meant that the home was as energy efficient as possible while automated blind curtains gave a real hotel experience in the bedrooms.

Old-World Inspired Guest Bedroom

The guest bedroom was inspired by charming, old-world design. Here we had free reign to play with colours, textures and patterns in a very bold way, starting with the cobalt jungle wallpaper from Graham & Brown. Chests on either side of the bed pick up on the dark tones of the custom-designed four-poster bed and are adorned with rustic lampshades and bases which add to the antique and vintage feel. The bevelled glass of the Paragon pendant chandelier from CTO lighting refracts and reflects light around the room. Neutral coloured wool curtains, a deep pile wool carpet from Stark and traditional armchairs made from rattan and wood finished with leopard print cushions combine effortlessly. For the wardrobe, we selected a Poliform design in another natural material - this time leather - with champagne metal trimmings for the drawers and handles.

Storage Solutions For A Shoes & Accessories Lover

A built-in concealed shoe closet provided much-needed extra storage for our client’s impressive shoe and handbag collection. Lacquered aquamarine shelving added a fabulous pop of colour. In the guest WC, we opted for dramatic Cipollino Rosso marble in a leathered finish and an entire wall of smoked mirror as well as a freestanding carved black marble sink and gunmetal taps. The result was an impactful and fun guest experience akin to a luxury hotel or restaurant.

Detailed Joinery & Various Casual Workspaces

We opted for a deeper colour palette in this living space with marine blue fabrics from Dedar Milano used in the curtains, which had the same metallic heat applied beading seen on the curtains in the drawing-room. The delicately hand-applied beads were a textured alternative to edging and gave a nod to the arts and crafts of our client’s Indian heritage. A matte black fibreglass coffee table from Imperfetto Lab placed on top of a curved rug and chevron pattern natural oak flooring plays on the idea of organic shape and form seen throughout the home. We selected detailed joinery in the form of a custom floating desk with a maple trim and pendant lights hanging above. Having multiple working areas was very important for our clients as they wanted various spaces where you could easily get your head down or take a call - something that’s much-needed in a changing world where more people are opting to work from home.

Personal & Antique Decorative Elements

An antique clock which we sourced is proudly displayed in the shelving alongside various family photographs. The lighting detail at the back of the shelves here accentuates the display and adds a layered, warm addition to the lighting in the room. Textured wallpaper behind the shelves of the library area also provides another layer of texture as does a Ben Whistler Uamvar armchair in a custom boiled wool fabric from Holland & Sherry interiors.

Indian-Inspired Interiors

Celebrating her Indian heritage throughout the home was of great importance to our client, so we incorporated design elements which supported this. We embraced deep sapphire blue and other vivid jewel tones synonymous with Indian culture as well as plenty of metallics, intricate beading, pattern and texture while maintaining consistency in the design so that it didn’t feel disjointed or overly themed. Simple art on the walls adds layers of texture and multiple pieces came from Indian artists, including a custom dyed bird feather piece in varying blue and green tones.

An Impactful Entrance Hall

The bright entrance hallway was neutral, inviting and uplifting. We played with the repeated theme of birds and feathers - this time a peacock-printed entrance bench by Lizzo fabrics. The custom shoe storage was combined with an antique brass mirror, marble bowl and art wall lights by Hannah Woodhouse.

Under Stair Storage For Ultimate Functionality

We know how much importance a busy family will place on storage space within their home. With this in mind, we made full use of the staircase by incorporating pull-out custom storage beneath the stairs which could be used for coats, umbrellas and more.

Sophisticated & Inviting Kitchen Design

Marble was an intrinsic material used throughout the home so we definitely wanted it to be used to its full potential in the kitchen area. Full height storage in dark wood and a quartz countertop is sophisticated but warming. Lots of storage helps with decluttering and keeps the kitchen clean and simple. The home also had a pantry to the back of the kitchen with an additional oven. The island with a breakfast bar provided a casual spot to sit and chat after a long day of work.

A Colourful & Inspiring Playroom

The clients wanted the home renovation to be as much about the children as themselves, so just as much care and attention was placed on these spaces. This green, jungle-inspired playroom comes with a trundle bed which makes it perfect for playdates and sleepovers. Custom green wardrobes and open shelving for books and toys encourage the kids to keep the room neat and tidy while plenty of colour, print and pattern is exciting and inspiring.

Sustainable Design Elements

Emphasis was placed on the incorporation of sustainable and natural materials and textures when designing the interior scheme for this home. For example, LED lighting throughout and an automated heating and cooling system meant that the home was sustainable in its functionality. As for design, we have plenty of wood, leather, stone, glass and natural fibre textiles. In the playroom, we incorporated eco-friendly furniture such as a table and chairs set cleverly made from melted down children’s toys.

A Memorable Childhood Bedroom

The twin boys have an entire floor of the home to themselves, so we used this opportunity to go wild with the playful, youthful and colourful interiors here. The fantastical bedroom had a planet theme and played on all things cosmic-inspired. Custom children's beds in a hide and seek blue moon fabric from Pollack were the ultimate spot for little astronauts to rest their heads and a nearby plaster pedestal table accompanied by a boucle swivel armchair provided a reading spot for mum or dad to send them to sleep with a bedtime story. For daytime fun, a puppet theatre makes for hours of entertainment.

The children’s jack and jill bathroom connects the playroom and bedroom together. There is a separate shower, WC, double sink and ample space for growing boys. We kept the colourful theme perfectly consistent and coherent with yellow, green and blue as well as neutral terrazzo tiles for the shower, bath and flooring.
