Old Baptist Chapel Conversion

Salcombe, Devon

A Distinctive Home with Coastal Views

Located in the heart of one of England’s iconic seaside towns is this former Baptist Chapel, with spectacular panoramic views over the harbour and Kingsland Estuary. Our interior design studio carried out a complete renovation and refurbishment on this unique four-bedroom home for a returning client. Set in the hills against a coastal backdrop, Managing Director Brian Woulfe saw the potential in this project from the moment he visited the site.

A Heavenly Chapel Conversion

Creating a practical living environment within a structure that was not formerly a home can sometimes be challenging. This chapel boasted fantastic proportions to play with and double height spaces, as well as structural glass walls which allowed light to flood in. We made innovative use of these features to create spaces that feel striking yet unintimidating and warm.

Contemporary Interiors for Living in Style

The distinctive home boasts contemporary living spaces suitable for modern family living. We wanted to create defined areas where individual family members could spend time comfortably focusing on wellness, work, or schooling. A custom tiled room divider fireplace is an efficient and stylish solution, serving more than one purpose. It subtly divides the room into different zones, allowing the homeowners and their guests to enjoy the comfort and warmth from wherever they choose to sit. Glass doors in to the multi-function room allow for privacy while maintaining a sense of connectedness.

Home Decorating with Modern Art

This home has an undeniably vibrant, artistic ambience. Alongside their contemporary style, the clients also have a real love for modern art, which we wanted to celebrate throughout the home. In doing so, we created a relaxed yet refined second home for this dynamic family to create memories in for years to come. In the TV area, the yellow sofa is beautifully backdropped by a joyful cherry blossom artwork creating a compelling and dynamic decorative background.

Bold Pops of Colour

The base colour palette in the main areas of this home is a neutral combination of slate grey, sandy beiges, and mossy greens. The light tones and splash of green represent the shoreland and surrounding landscapes. We enhanced this with bold pops of citrus colours, with a plush, tangerine, velvet armchair and a sunshine yellow sofa. We opted for luxury fabrics that are both durable and inviting, to ensure the home feels as welcoming as it looks.

Timeless Kitchen Design & Handcrafted Traditional Joinery

We appointed Kitchen Architecture to supply and fit a timeless Bulthaup kitchen, which we combined with traditional English joinery. The family-run and design-led business fitted a stunning kitchen that works as a place to come together from morning to night time. The open plan space blends seamlessly into a lounge area – just what’s needed for entertaining, relaxing and socialising. With ample space for storage and unfussy design, the kitchen feels clean and minimal. We also incorporated Kitchen Architecture’s bespoke Teddy Edwards range for the utility room’s panelling and furniture which increases the storage capabilities. A practical boot room is handy for hanging wet suits, and with underfloor heating, ensures maximum practical comfort.

Investing in Durable & Hard-wearing Interiors

Embracing sustainable options and the concept of slow interiors, we hand-picked furnishings and materials based on their quality and durability. This involved selecting pieces that would age gracefully in a well-loved family home with pets. We also ensured the home was as energy efficient as possible in order to reducing its carbon footprint.

A Nod to the Elements with Natural Materials

This stunning home sits on the cusp of nature, surrounded by crashing waves, wild marshes, sun-soaked beaches, and rolling hills. Large windows throughout serve to invite the outside in, but we chose to deepen this connection to the elements further with organic textures. Woven baskets decorate the walls of the kitchen and lounge and also in the main living area, straw lampshades have a relaxed, seaside feel.

Organic and Grounding Bedrooms

The coastal property has four bedrooms and in the mezzanine bedroom, we carved out a relaxing space that serves as a private sanctuary. Glass walls looking down into the living area are concealed with lush, floor skimming drapes from which instantly add warmth. Built-in wardrobes make maintaining a clean and tidy space easy, and a playful assortment of bedding materials add tactile decor. In a further double bedroom upstairs, a round circular window seat is a cosy nook for curling up with a book, and a pair of rattan armchairs make fantastic use the slanted ceiling.
