A Rural Balearic Villa’s Light and Breezy Living Space

A laid-back setting for summer escapes in the Mediterranean sun, this open-plan living room offers ample space for peaceful relaxation. Designed for a client who was keen to host extended family and international friends, the living and entertaining area includes different seating options, plenty of natural light and the grounding comforts of natural materials.

For this project, Designed by Woulfe won the ‘Residential Interior Private Residence Spain’ award at the European Property Awards 2020.

A pair of iconic Flexform ABC chairs in a woven, pale blue fabric sit side by side, anchoring the seating area to create a wonderfully cosy, inward-facing space for socialising while enjoying the views. Both the seat and backrest of these classic armchairs are extendible so that guests can make themselves right at home and adjust their level of comfort.

Two large Soft Dream Sofas with a plump, goose-down filling make for a sit-down-and-sink-in feeling. Also from Flexform, the lightweight sofas sit on cast-metal bronze feet and mirror each other.

The Salperton Lamp we selected from Porta Romana serves as both a light source and a decorative piece. The hard metal frame and structural base balance out the softness of the seating area and lightness of the room.

Also from Porta Romana, the Spin Floor Lamp is crafted from cast composite and resembles spinning planetary rings.

Ethical Wool & Other Natural Materials

When renovating this classic yet modern holiday home we were eager to create spaces that would provide a sense of rejuvenation. Nature-inspired interiors that fused natural materials which would give a nod to the property’s rural character were a key element of this.

Ethically woven wool rugs from Urbanara in a melange pattern tie together different colours in a room while remaining neutral.

Hand-woven rugs like this one from Nordic Knots that are undyed are also a timeless option when wanting to make a minimalist statement.

We commissioned Alice Watt to create a split canvas painting which would complement the natural tones in the room and bring about an overall sense of calm and serenity.

Whether your home is on the coast or not, this grounding wood sage and sea salt scented candle by Jo Malone will bring about that fresh, sea air feeling.

Creating Space With Glass Furniture

The elegant glass coffee table at the centre of the seating area is Tom Faulkner’s Lexington Coffee Table. It can be tailor-made to your own measurements, shape, finishing and choice of glass. Here, we opted for a soft oval design with clear glass that sharpens up the room while still creating space. The lower shelf is also ideal for displaying coffee table books.

Teaming up with award-winning lighting designers John Cullen Lighting we created a bespoke layered lighting scheme throughout this Balearic villa and in the living area, we opted for spotlights.

Indoor palm trees, cacti and succulent plants which were sourced locally bring greenery into the space. Some of our favourite UK suppliers for indoor and outdoor plants are Patch Plants for their easy to care for plants, Bloom Box Club for its subscription service and RHS Plants for its expansive selection.

To accompany the greenery, gorgeous plant pots such as these aged terracotta ones by Neptune add a rustic touch.

Building Textured Layers With Soft Furnishings

Cushions and throws serve to make the seating areas all the more cosy and combining textures within a neutral palette adds warmth while tying in with the rest of the colour scheme.

Johnstons of Elgin crafts fine merino wool and cashmere throws that are simple but exquisitely made, with subtle detailing such as whipstitched edges and a selection of colour combinations.

Scatter cushions like these by Neptune of various sizes, weaves, colours and patterns clash with subtlety and bring personality. They also have an impressive collection of British sheep’s wool throws that not only look and feel good but are strong, insulating, breathable, hypoallergenic and renewable.
