A Chic, Cosy Living Area With A Boutique Hotel Feel

This informal yet luxurious living room of a Notting Hill home which we renovated is a gathering space for connection and relaxation. Our clients were worldly, avid travellers, so we combined aspects of a boutique hotel with home comforts for a look and feel that is familiar with a sense of decadence, through tactile furnishings, a chic and muted colour scheme and soft, fluid shapes.

The donut-like armchairs look like clouds suspended in the centre of the room. The rounded, continuous shape seems to cocoon you and covered in a soft, boucle fabric, they’re the perfect spot for hours of reading. The smooth, brass bottom of the chairs adds a soft touch of luxury and contrast in texture.

Soho Home’s Garret Chair provides a similar effect. Shaped for ultimate comfort, the chair allows you to sink into its curves made from soft bouclé.

This delicate and luxurious yarn was also used for a bespoke sofa which our studio designed especially for this project. This off-white bouclé curved sofa from Six The Residence has a strong resemblance. A luxe take on mid-century design, it features high-quality foam padding, upholstered in an off-white bouclé fabric. Further similar styles can be found at Liang & Eimil and Skandium.

Travertine Coffee Tables

Travertine is a form of limestone that works as a great alternative, or alongside, marble and granite. Two circular tables crafted from this silky stone sit side by side, varying in colour and size.

Benefiting from the organic patterns provided by the natural world, the neutral shades of beige and brown travertine have beautifully striped and swirling effects with natural grooves. These nature-given elements of the stone, with their many irregularities, give a nod to the imperfect.

1st dibs is a fantastic source for one-of-a-kind, luxury furniture and homeware items. This hexagonal travertine table is very similar to the ones in this Notting Hill home. This unique triangular shaped travertine table is also a great alternative.

Maami home at Archiproducts has another travertine coffee table which we love, this time lower and much darker with a glass top, yet in a similar circular shape to the ones we selected.

Statement-making Green Marble Fireplace

A green fireplace carved from Cipollino Verde marble makes a statement in the centre of the room. The modern fireplace features picture frame detailing with a border around the edge and is both a functional and aesthetic feature in the living area. Marble is a versatile material, so we enjoyed incorporating it throughout the home. To select this stone, we took a trip to a stone yard with the client.

The use of fluid, natural shapes draws on elements of biophilic design. To strengthen the connection to the natural environment even further, we selected some air-purifying indoor house plants. They provide the perfect finishing touches, adding vibrant colour and life as well as their healthful benefits. Read our interview with Charlotte Wood of bespoke florist studio Wild Wood London for more on real and artificial indoor house plants.

We gave this family living area a really approachable and inviting feel through the use of tactile, rich textures. Natural fibres of varying colours and weights combine for ultimate comfort and cosiness. A bespoke sheepskin rug was commissioned for the central space, but you can find a similar faux design from La Redoute.

Accent Coffee Tables & Finishing Touches

A pair of artful accent coffee tables were placed to the side of the sofa, for books and family photographs. The bongo drum-shaped tables are weighty and sculptural, adding a contrasting texture to the room. You can achieve a similar look with the Tod round side antique tables from My Haus or opt for a darker version in black from Amara, with the Nanded Side Table by House Doctor.

We selected soft furnishings woven from natural textiles such as wool, silk, cotton and linen. Soft throws draped over the armchairs are waiting to be snuggled into. This gorgeous Missoni cashmere throw from Amara is akin to the one we chose for this family living room.

A decorative tray makes a great coffee table accessory. This rectangular tray from Hex Luxury is made from faux shagreen with a brass rim and is great for candles or drinks.

Three matching white cushions and a white throw add comfort and elegance. A fluffy curved rug lies in front of the sofa, hosting two marble tables in different natural tones. Adjacent to the sofa, two black side tables display books and framed photos. Adorning the wall are two white textured art pieces, while behind the sofa stands a tall, vibrant green plant, adding a touch of nature to the space.
