A London Family Home’s Mid-Century Modern Bedroom

Effortless and understated interiors in this sleek principal bedroom make an impact without feeling contrived. Plenty of wood – hardwood floors and a custom walnut floating headboard – feel neutral and natural, while metallic accents and luxury soft furnishings add a touch of elegance. Multi-level lighting enhances the bedroom’s calming and soothing ambience. For this project, Designed by Woulfe won the ‘Residential Interior Private Residence London’ award at the UK Property Awards 2020 and was a finalist at the British Homes Awards 2020.

A pair of two-tier Bert Frank pendant lights suspended from fluted brass stems on either side of the bed frame the space with soft, warm light.

For the main lighting source in the bedroom, we selected a metallic Trevi pendant from CTO Lighting. Inspired by the famous fountain at the Piazza di Trevi, the contemporary chandelier features 3 matt opal glass shades and satin brass finishing.

Bringing the Outdoors In

A plush hand-woven rug from Jacaranda draws attention to the centre of the room and provides softness and texture which contrasts nicely against the dark wooden tones.

For a touch of nature, we called on experts Wild Wood London to select the perfect indoor plants. To read about tips on selecting the perfect plants for your home and outdoor space, check out our interview with Charlotte, Founder of Wild Wood London, over on our Design Journal.

Bespoke Joinery, Upholstery & Soft Furnishing

All of the fabrics used throughout the principal bedroom were selected from our go-to for soft furnishings, Mark Alexander Fabrics, who are experts in finely crafted fabrics and wallcoverings.

The custom walnut floating headboard by bespoke interior joinery company Lethbridge Lines divides the space and creates a walk-in dressing room area. This was upholstered by our friends at Material Concepts in a Mark Alexander textured weave made from linen yarn in ‘Array Carbon Grey’.

The scatter cushions were a combination of embroidered linen cushions with a fine, linear stitch and darker, plush cotton velvet ones.

Warm and Cosy Design Details

For the curtains, we repeated the same embroidered linen textile from the scatter cushions combined with the textured weave used on the headboard. The combination of both created a wonderful textural dimension to the drapes and added warmth to the room.

A cosy chair was also placed by the window in the room for additional seating, which was upholstered in matching cotton velvet as the scatter cushions.

Walnut Wood and Anthracite Spray finished chest of drawers was created by the talented joinery team at Lethbridge Lines.
